LOW MOOR — Nov. 2 was an historic night for the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools Division with 26 students becoming members of the newly-expanded National Honor Society Chapter at Alleghany High School.
The induction ceremony was historic because it involved students from both the previous iteration of Alleghany High School and the former Covington High School. The Frances Dunn Butler Chapter at AHS has been in existence since approximately the 1967-1968 school year. While Covington High School had a chapter of the National Beta Club, CHS did not have an active chapter of the National Honor Society.
Alleghany High School and Covington High School became one high school this year as part of the AHPS consolidation agreement. The consolidated school maintained the Alleghany High School name, and it serves students in grades 9-12 from throughout the Alleghany Highlands.
During the induction ceremony at Hodnett Hall, 24 AHS students became new members of the National Honor Society. They joined two students who were already members of the NHS – Orchid Tucker and Madeline Nicely. Tucker is president of the AHS chapter, while Abigail Jones is the vice president. Nicely serves as secretary.
The new members are Kole Caldwell, Serenity Campbell, Macyn Cash, Victoria Critzer, Christian Flenner, Sarah Francis, Abbie Fridley, Hayli Givens, Brooklynn Hicks, Travis Hicks, Kinlee Huffman, Allyson Kessler, Kinsey Middleton, Sadie Moye, Kaidence Nicely, Baylee Peters, BreAnna Phillips, Abigail Riley, Riley Spangler, Jacklyne Snyder, Gabriela Taylor, Adam Tremblay, Gavin Via, and Eli Weese.
Members are selected based on high standards of scholastic achievement, service, leadership, character, and community service.
Tucker and Jones led the candlelight induction ceremony. An oath of membership was administered by Jennifer Taylor, an assistant principal at AHS.
AHPS was created through the merger of Alleghany County Public Schools, Covington City Public Schools, and Jackson River Technical Center. The school division serves approximately 2,700 students and it is jointly funded by Alleghany County and the City of Covington.
