LOW MOOR — Haley Jonas, a member of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA Dolphins swim team, recently competed in the Upper Southeast Regional YMCA Meet in Lynchburg.
Teams from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee participated in the March 15-17 meet at Liberty University. Only swimmers who attained qualifying times were permitted to compete in this prestigious event.
Competing in the 9-10-year-old age group, Haley qualified in seven events, including the 50 Back, 100 Back, 100 IM, 200 IM, 50 Fly, 100 Fly and 50 Free. She was allowed to participate in a maximum of nine events.
Haley recorded seven of nine Personal Best swims and finished seventh in the 100 Fly. The Dolphins team (Haley) finished 28th out of 36 teams.
“We’re so proud of Haley,” said Shari Peterson, who along with Kathy Wilson coaches the Dolphins swim team. “She’s worked really hard, and she had an awesome season.”
Haley is the daughter of Toby and Lisa Jonas. She is a fifth grader at Sharon Elementary School. This was Haley’s fifth year as a member of the YMCA Dolphins swim team.
The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Dolphins swim season begins the first week of October and continues through early March. The Dolphins swim team is open to swimmers ages 5 through 19 who have passed the team swim test.
