Alleghany Mountaineers (4-1) Boys Tennis head coach, Seth Davis mentioned last week that the team had a lot of work to do to prepare for tougher opponents coming up in the schedule.
This past Friday, the Mounties were handed their first loss of the season, 9-0 to the Riverheads Gladiators.
Heading into the teams fifth match of the season, the Mounties against their opponents were 33-3. The Mounties were unable to pick up a victory in the shutout loss to the Gladiators on Friday.
After a quick 4-0 start that came with multiple wins over Narrows and Bassett, the Mounties let one get by them.
“We were exposed. We have so many things to get better at, and it needs to happen soon”, said coach Davis.
Along with outscoring their opponents 33-3 in the first four matches, the Mounties were an undefeated 9-0 in doubles competition. The team also suffered its first loss in doubles, losing all three of their matches.
The Gladiators set the pace of the match by winning the three doubles games, including handing Coree Nicely his first loss of the season in either doubles or singles. Nicely and Baron Leitch lost to Higgins and Eppard 8-5.
Mckinley Goodbar and Eli Entsminger, were the closest in doubles competition, losing 8-6.
In singles, Leitch kept his match close with an 8-6 set loss. Maddox Crance, was outdueled by Higgins 8-5.
The team will look to put this one behind them as the Mounties head back on the road for a doubleheader against Martinsville on Friday.
