Alleghany County Public Schools will host Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. According to Virginia law, in order to enroll in a Virginia Public School Kindergarten program, a child must turn five years old by September 30, 2022.
In addition, Alleghany County Public Schools offers a Junior-Kindergarten program for children who turn five years old by December 31, 2022.
Kindergarten Orientation is recommended for all parents whose child meets the age requirement. Callaghan, Mountain View, and Sharon Elementary Schools will each host an orientation session for parents of students who reside in their attendance districts.
During the session, important information about the upcoming school year will be provided by Kindergarten teachers, the school principal, a school nurse, and a school counselor. Presentations will cover topics such as the Kindergarten curriculum, the Junior-Kindergarten program, documents required for enrollment, and good communication strategies between home and school. Parents will also have the opportunity to sign up for a date and time in late April for their child to be administered the Kindergarten readiness screening.
