The Area 18 Special Olympics Team has long provided opportunities for individuals with limited abilities the opportunity to participate in local sports. Founded on the firm belief that all individuals deserve the opportunity to showcase their talents and abilities, the Area 18 Special Olympics program offers a wide range of sports that last all year-long and are tailored to the unique needs of its athletes.

With a focus on inclusion, sportsmanship, and personal growth, the Area 18 Special Olympics Team creates a supportive and empowering environment where athletes can thrive both on and off the field. Through training sessions, competitions, and social events, participants gain confidence, develop lifelong friendships, and grow new athletic skills.

On Sunday, April 14, the team met up at Linden Park to practice their skills for the upcoming summer games. While some participated in softball practice with coach Benjamin “Ben” Nicely, others chose to perfect their bocce ball and cornhole skills.

The Virginian Review spoke briefly to Ruth Britt, the Area 18 Special Olympics Coordinator, to get a little more information on the upcoming summer games. “We’re not going to Richmond this year for softball because they have softball, swimming, and tennis for the summer games,” Britt said. “But we’re doing our own summer games, so on May 19, we’re going to have a fun day and we’re going to do bocce, cornholes, and softball. We’re getting some people to come and play them, so that’s what we’re planning for our summer games.”

The event will be held at Fort Young Park on 1600 South Conrad Avenue in Covington from 2pm until “whenever,” according to Britt. “We’re going to have food: hot dogs and people are going to bring covered dishes to go with the hot dogs.” The food will be free to guests and observers, Britt says, noting that they also plan to get the fire department and police involved in the upcoming event.

All are encouraged to come out in support of these incredible athletes who work hard year-round to represent Special Olympics in Alleghany County. In the world of Area 18 Special Olympics and Special Olympics in general, each athlete has a unique journey filled with determination, passion, and triumph. By shining a spotlight on these amazing and inspiring individuals, we not only celebrate their successes, but also their message to always reach for your dreams, no matter your obstacles in life.

Whether it’s breaking personal records, winning medals, or simply participating with joy and enthusiasm, each athlete on the Area 18 Special Olympics Team contributes to the beautiful tapestry of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Their achievements inspire us all to push our own boundaries and strive for excellence in all areas of life.
