The Alleghany Highlands YMCA kicked off opening night of the 2022 Adult Men’s League on Wednesday night.
The league features 12 total teams, and over 100 former local high school and collegiate athletes competing to bring home the first post pandemic men’s league title.
Participation in this year’s league is up 100% from the last season, which was held two years ago, and included 6 teams.
Before that season, the last adult men’s basketball league was the legendary Covington based Charity league, which ended in 2009.
Special thanks to Jacob Grimes, the organizer of the league, along with Jennifer Unroe (YMCA CEO) and Micheal Mays. Grimes reached out to Mrs. Unroe two years ago to speak about bringing a men’s basketball league back to the area, and she gave the greenlight without hesitation.
Sharing the same sentiment as many others, Grimes, who is also a volunteer, says he just wanted a place to play basketball, and is excited it’s back. “I’m just looking forward to having a great year. We have a lot of competition in this year’s league and I can’t wait to watch.”
Teams, Alcova A, B, and C, are sponsored by Jason Helmintoller.
“For me, I am so glad to see the league in place for our area. I think it’s a great way to bring fellowship amongst different age groups through a common love of the game. I grew up playing as a teen and young adult with some older guys, and really enjoyed the time spent hooping with the fellas”, said Helmintoller.
Two of Helmintoller’s teams faced off in the opening game of the night. Alcova A defeated Alcova B 63-50 in the first iteration of the in-season Alcova Mortgage Classic. Alcova A was led by up and coming cornhole player and sharpshooter Justin Gibson, who made five field goals from behind the arc, and finished with 19 points. Chris Tingler of Alcova A, and Cody Fuller from Alcova B both finished with 15 points. Fuller led Alcova B in scoring, while Jon Landford finished with 13, and Jason Hall added 11. Fuller, Landford, and Hall each made three three-pointers.
In game two of the night, cfSports Elite held off a second half rally from Wright Way Motors (WWM) to win 68-60. Tyler Shelton of cfSports Elite led all scorers with 20 points, while Daylin Pinkston added another 15 points, making three shots from behind the arc. WWM, was led by former Bath County Chargers, and William & Mary Tribe Quarterback, Jacob Phillips, and former Rockbridge High School, and Ferrum College two sport (Basketball, Football) star, Marcus Mayo. Phillips, finished with 12 points, while Mayo led WWM with 13. WWM, also features three Kessinger brothers, who combined for 16 total points.
In the final matchup of opening night, The Nobodies (72), who also scored the most points of the night pulled out a tough five-point victory against The Alleghany Vipers (67). Christian Allen of the Vipers was the leading scorer of the night with 29, while David Early of The Nobodies finished with 26. The Vipers 44-point second half was the most points scored in any half of the night.
The next slate of games is scheduled for this Saturday, February 12 at 2:00 p.m.
Bath Community Hospital vs Dressler Auctions gets the trio of games started, followed by Walmart Ballers vs Alcova C, and The Yard Dogs vs Ingevity to close out the first week.
