A brief joint meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors and Covington City Council convened on March 19, primarily to review the proposed budget and Capital Improvement Plan presented by Alleghany Highlands Public Schools (AHPS).
The spotlight of the meeting was on AHPS’s budget proposal for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, amounting to an impressive $48,635,414. Notably, AHPS did not request additional local funding beyond the $12,235,932 already earmarked for their operations. Interestingly, during the presentation, no questions were raised by either the board of supervisors or the city council, indicating a general acceptance of the proposed budget.
AHPS’s Finance Director, Rebecca Irvine, expressed sincere appreciation for the community’s overwhelming support of the consolidation efforts. “Community support of the consolidation efforts has been awesome,” Irvine remarked, highlighting the positive collaboration between AHPS and the local community.
Eric Tyree, representing AHPS, also presented the Capital Improvement Plan, shedding light on several significant projects slated for implementation. These projects include an outdoor tennis court project at Alleghany High School, door lock and hardware upgrades at Covington Middle School, audio visual updates in Curfman Hall of CMS, asbestos tile abatement at Callaghan Elementary School, roof shingle replacement at Mountain View Elementary School and Clifton Academy, HVAC replacement at Sharon Elementary School, bathroom repairs at the School Board Office, and the creation of an outdoor learning space at the School Board Office.
