GOP Pushes Budget Slash
Republicans driving for a $6,000,000,000 slash in President Truman’s $37,500,000,000 budget were accused by two of their own leaders today of imperiling the nation’s security and world peace. Proponents of the economy move insisted, however, that this is not the case. Chairman Gurney(R-S.D.), of the Senate Armed Services Committee declared the cut voted 8 to 2 by the Senate-House budget subcommittee would top $1,750,000,000 off the $11,2000,000,000 Mr. Truman asked for the army and navy. “I cannot vote for anything that hamstrings national security,” Gurney added.

U.S. Opens Big Aerial Campaign
The United States has launched it’s biggest aerial campaign across South Vietnam in more than 18 months, hoping to crush a Communist buildup along South Vietnam’s western borders. Ranging over jungled infiltration networks, supply routes, staging areas and storage sites, U.S. tactical fighter-bombers and B-52 heavy bombers made about 200 strikes Friday and today in northern and central South Vietnam.
Local Boy Scout To Appear on TV
Mike Landis, a member of Troop 31, Covington, will appear on the show “Meeting the Challenge: The BSA in 72” as a member of the order of the Arrow Indian Dance Team from Shenandoah Lodge 258. Troop 31 is sponsored by McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Covington City Council Approves Jail Contract
Covington City Council, acting following an executive session, voted unanimously to approve the proposed cooperative jail agreement with AlleghanyCounty and Clifton Forge on condition some minor wording changes. Bath County has also been invited to approve the agreement. The changes sought by council would be to add “if necessary” after a sentence about the possible closing of half a block of Court Avenue to accommodate the new jail and to add “and design” to a sentence about Alleghany County and Covington being responsible for construction of the facility.

Three Local Athletes Receive All-State Honors
Three local area athletes were recently honored by the Virginia High School Coaches Association(VHSCA) with all-state honors. Bath County’s Mitchell Stinespring and Covington’s Lucas Via were named to the first team All-Group A football team. Bath County’s Amanda Shifflett was named first team All-Group A volleyball team.
