HOT SPRINGS – Two weeks into the season and Bath County’s varsity boys’ baseball team has only played two games and dealt with several rain outs.
The Chargers opened the season at Hot Springs with a wild 10-9 victory over Pocahontas County in eight innings that ended on a Ryan Ratcliffe walk-off two-run single.
Ratcliffe’s walk-off base hit could not have been better scripted for the game between the Chargers and Warriors as the two teams battled it out in a slugfest all game long.
Pocahontas County jumped out to a 4-1 lead through three innings, before Bath County scored six runs between innings three and four to take a 7-4 lead. The two teams would be tied 8-8 after seven innings as the fans were treated to extra innings.
Greyson Walton led the Chargers with three hits, while Ratcliffe, Issac Ingram, and Remington Gordon each had a two. BCHS finished with 14 total hits in the season-opening win.
Ingram, who contributed offensively, also had an effective outing on the mound as he finished with a no-decision. In 5.1 innings of no-decision work, Ingram struck out 10 batters. Jake Boguess (1-0) earned the win in relief of Ingram after allowing just one run in 2.2 innings. Boguess only allowed one hit out of the bullpen.
The walk-off win was short-lived for BCHS as the team quickly turned-around the next day and played on the road against Pendleton County. The Wildcats crushed the Chargers 10-0 in five innings.
Through the first two innings of the game Pendleton County scored nine runs. Cole Harper led the way for the Warriors with two hits, both doubles and a game-high four RBI’s. Allden Rexrode added two hits and two RBI’s.
Pendleton County used four pitchers in the five innings that shut down Bath County and held them to only two hits. Ingram and Owen Perdue each had singles. Cooper Lowry suffered the loss for the Chargers.
Bath County (1-1) had both their scheduled games last week against Highland and Eastern Montgomery get rained out. The Chargers are off until Tuesday, April 9th when they head on the road to Buena Vista to play Parry McCluer in a Pioneer District baseball game.
