On Wednesday evening, March 27, the Alleghany JV Cougar baseball team took on the Carroll County Cavaliers in a game that would end in a 4-1 victory for our boys in blue.

The game got off to a relatively slow start with both teams going blow for blow, inning after inning. At the top of the sixth inning, both teams proved evenly matched, as neither had managed to score against the other team in what appeared to be heading in the direction of a scoreless game.

However, at the bottom of the sixth, the Alleghany Cougars took advantage of several missed opportunities by the Cavaliers, starting with a grounder by sophomore Austin Jack which led to a single. Jack was able to advance to second following a wild pitch by the Cavaliers before Buddy Leisure-White nailed a grounder and singled following another Cavalier error. With a man on first and another on second, Landon Arritt stepped up to the plate and hit a grounder, pulling off a single. Meanwhile, Jack advanced to third base and White advanced to second. The stage was then set for Jalen Raether who stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded.

Raether grounded out, but it didn’t stop Jack from scoring the first run for Alleghany. White was able to advance to third while Arritt advanced to second. With two men in scoring positions and two outs, Tucker Phillips stepped up to the plate. Phillips hit a ground ball and was able to advance to first, thanks to another Cavalier error while Phillips advanced to second and White and Arritt score. The score was 3-0, Alleghany, with one out remaining at the bottom of the sixth.

Sophomore Trey Cook stepped up to the plate with Arritt still on second. Cook crushed a fly ball to center field, singling on the play, while Phillips rounded the bases and scored on the play, bringing the score to 4-0 in favor of the Cougars. An out would then occur, ending their impressive hot streak at the bottom of the sixth.

The Carroll County Cavaliers seemed determined not to go down without a fight and came back at the top of the seventh with a whole new energy. While they were able to score a run following an Alleghany error, it would be the only one allowed by the Cougars. With the Cavaliers unable to match or surpass the Cougars, the game ended without Alleghany having to bat at the bottom of the seventh.

The Alleghany Cougar JV baseball team now has a regular season record of 5-1. Impressive for any team. However, for this first-year team, it speaks volumes of the talent on the field as well as the coaches behind the scenes. It’ll be fun to see what more lies ahead this inaugural year!

Their next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3 at Casey Field at 5:30pm against the Buffalo Gap Bisons. Come on out and show your support for the Alleghany Cougars JV baseball team!
