The Alleghany Historical Society held its summer meeting at the Covington C&O Depots on Sunday, August 21.
The official opening of the current exhibit in the depot museum, “The Art of the C&O Railway,” was also observed.
A special recognition and presentation was made to Ms. Barbara Bush of Lexington, S.C.
Ms. Bush has contributed a number of prints from her original paintings and the proceeds of the sale of her prints support the Society’s operations.
Her latest gift was an original painting of the restored depots as viewed from Maple Avenue.
Barbara Jean Sink Bush grew up in Covington and Alleghany County and attended Boiling Spring School. She has a son, Gary Tingler, who now lives in S.C.
Another son, Troy, lost his life in an automobile accident.
She has been married to James Bush for 25 years. Both worked at the Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Division operations in Columbia, SC, and are now retired.
Barbara studied art under a University of South Carolina professor, Ms. Debbie Sherer.
She paints for personal enjoyment and dedicated her contributions to her late grandparents, William and Trudie Myers.
President Bonnie Keyser reminded members of two important scheduled events.
On September 18, the Society will celebrate the completion of the sidewalk and fence project.
A special program will take place at 3 p.m. at which time the fence will be dedicated in memory of the late Carolyn B. Nettleton, a progressive Covington businesswoman and community leader.
On October 9, the fall meeting of the Society will take place at Covington City Hall.
The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and the program will be a presentation by author Al Kresse on “Alleghany Iron.”
The program documents the booming iron industry along the C&O Railway between 1873 and 1924, and recounts the operations in Alleghany and surrounding counties.
The Society is in the midst of its membership drive and encourages all local citizens to contribute to its efforts to preserve heritage and promote the study of local history.
Individual memberships are $15 and corporate memberships begin at $100.
The depot museum is open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday-Sunday.
