On March 1, 2024, these items were seized as a result of a detailed investigation by the Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force. Sheriff Kyle Moore stated, “Although you do not see a large amount of drugs (10 grams of cocaine), you do see a large amount of cash ($7,491). This cash is the result of the persons arrested selling drugs on the streets of Alleghany County and the City of Covington.” Two weapons were seized during the search as well as cellular phones. These phones will assist investigators in future drug investigations. The search was conducted at 310 Marion St. in the City of Covington. Another search warrant was conducted at a separate residence with no evidence being found. Shaun Christopher Smith of Covington was arrested and charged with distribution/sell of schedule I or II drugs and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Terry Lee Taylor was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute a Schedule I or II drug. Both are currently being held at the Alleghany County Regional Jail. The Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force is comprised of officers from the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, The Virginia State Police, The Covington Police Dept., The Bath County Sheriff’s Office and the Craig County Sheriff’s Office.
On February 7, 2024, Ralph Preston Neal was arrested and charged with Possession with intent to distribute schedule I or II drugs by the Alleghany Highlands Drug Task Force. He is still being held in the Alleghany Regional Jail
