On March 19, 2024, the Alleghany Varsity Cougars soccer team traveled to Stuarts Draft for an exhilarating rematch game. The first time the AHS Cougars played the Stuarts Draft Cougars was just a week prior when the opposing felines walked away with the victory after a hard-fought game that ended 3-2 in favor of Stuarts Draft. However, this time, the Alleghany Cougars were ready and walked away with a 1-0 victory!

From the sound of the first whistle, the AHS Cougars were hungry for victory. The boys in white and blue displayed incredible teamwork and dedication, dominating possession of the ball and thwarting the opposing Cougars attacks and launching a series of counterattacks that would prove victorious in the end.

It was a scoreless game for both teams until freshman Mason Hale was fouled with only 4 minutes remaining on the game clock. The player chosen to kick the penalty kick was sophomore Brenden Seckner. The penalty kick was good! That single kick would be the deciding factor that ended the opposing Cougars’ chances of going undefeated against our own.

Alleghany’s goalie, James Helmintoller Quantz, proved himself to be an unstoppable force in the game. The junior goalie would deter every effort made by Stuarts Draft to put points on the board, ultimately securing Alleghany’s victory.

Alleghany’s next soccer game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, at Nelson County High School against the Nelson County Governors. This will also be a rematch game for the Cougars, as they last played against Nelson County at home in a game that resulted in a Governors’ victory of 4-2. However, now that the Cougars have secured their first victory, you can bet they’re thirsty for another one —and another victory rematch game!

Go Cougars!
