The “John Hillert Souper Sunday” event, hosted by the Historic Masonic Theatre and Ampitheatre, is ending soon on November 5, 2023, the same day when soups are being picked up via “drive-thru.”

“Souper Sunday,” now in its 9th consecutive year, is a fundraising event to benefit the Clifton Forge Food Pantry, which will acquire 100% of the proceeds. In years past, the event has managed to raise around $3,000 or more, which subsequently, is the goal this year: the raise at least $3,000 for the Clifton Forge Food Pantry who selflessly and tirelessly donate their time each year to help fight hunger in our community.

This year, there are 25 people making soup, some of whom are making two different kinds, for a total of 28 different varieties to choose from. In total, there are 325 quarts of soup being sold for “Souper Sunday,” with over 200 that were sold in the first 48 hours alone! As of today, there have been 265 quarts sold at $11 a quart, leaving only 60 quarts of soup left to be sold.

Quarts of soup can be ordered online at https://historicmasonictheatre.com/masonic-event/souper-sunday-2/. There, you will find a list of all the soups being sold as well as the chefs preparing and donating them. Justin Reiter, executive director of the Historic Masonic Theatre and Ampitheatre, said that all our local chefs who are donating soups used their own money to go out and buy all their ingredients to prepare the soup, with the theatre providing only the containers they are to be sold in.

Reiter also stated that those who wish to purchase a quart of soup can do so up until the day they are to be picked up on November 5th. The way it will work is, on Sunday the 5th, those who purchased quarts of soup should drive to the back of the theatre, give your name to Glen Bryant  —he will be the gentleman with the walkie-talkie in hand— and Mr. Bryant will use the device to let workers know which order to bring out. You will be able to sit in the comfort of your own vehicle and chat it up with Bryant while workers prepare and deliver your order right to your car.

For any other questions or concerns about this event, Justin Reiter encourages you to contact the Historic Masonic Theatre at 540-862-5655.
