CULPEPER – Coming in with a season-high five game losing streak, the Covington Lumberjacks (19-20) playing in their sixth doubleheader of the month of July, split with the Culpeper Cavaliers on Saturday the 22nd.
Culpeper pushed Covington’s losing streak to six games with a 9-5 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
Trailing 4-1, the Cavaliers erupted with a six-run fourth inning with the biggest blow coming from Reese Beheler who crushed a go-ahead three-run home run.
With a three-run advantage, Culpeper would extend their lead with runs in fifth and sixth innings on solo home runs from Conner Butler and David Coppedge.
Ronny Medina and Edinson Renteria Jr. led Covington with two hits each, while Ranciel Ventura led the Lumberjacks with a pair of RBIs. Christopher Alvarez hit his first home run which was a part of the team three-run second inning that had then built a 3-1 advantage for the Jacks.
On the mound, Jacob Havern suffered the loss after allowing six runs on four hits in 3.2 innings, where he walked three, struck out four.

The Lumberjacks in game two of the doubleheader snapped out of their funk with 7-1 victory over the Cavaliers.
Covington was backed by a big performance on the mound from Jacob Heath. Heath was brilliant as he fell just one out away from a 7-inning complete-game. In 6.2 innings, Heath allowed one run on four hits, while walking three, struck out four.
The Lumberjacks offense came up big in first and fourth innings as they scored all seven runs between the two innings.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Gabriel Miranda put Covington ahead with a bases-clearing three-run double.
As Culpeper grabbed a run back in the bottom of the first inning, Covington would push across four more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead for good by six runs. The Lumberjacks grabbed RBIs in the inning from Ronny Medina, Victor Sanchez, Edinson Renteria Jr., and Chenar Brown.
Christopher Watson led the Lumberjacks with two hits, while Miranda led the team with three RBI’s.
