Covington High School has released a list of scholarship recipients for the Class of 2020.
This year, over $344,800 in scholarships were awarded to members of the CHS Class of 2020.
Scholarships and awards for CHS seniors are traditionally presented during the school’s annual Senior Awards and Scholarship Night program held near the end of the school year.
School officials cancelled this year’s ceremony due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Scholarships awarded, and their recipients, are as follows:
Adam Jones Memorial Scholarship: Kelsey Whitmore, $500;
Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Club R. Lynn Graham Memorial Scholarship: Cailin Johnson, $500;
Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Club Whitney Trumbo Memorial Scholarship: Shawn Shiflett, $500;
Alleghany Highlands Virginia Tech Alumni Association Scholarship: Anna Arritt, $1,000;
Alleghany Retired Teachers Association Scholarship: Shawn Shiflett, $500;
American Red Cross Scholarship: Drew Holloway, $250;
Applachian Habitat Association Scholarship: Hunter Tallman, $1,000;

Helen F. Dickson Scholarship: Cailin Johnson and Shawn Shiflett, $2,000 each;

Jackson River Community Credit Union Marvin Brown Scholarship: Cailin Johnson, $500;
Lewis “Butch” Venable Memorial Scholarship: Amiah Hunter, Jabari Williams, Zy’Onah Garrison, Drew Holloway, Tahira Godfrey and Kimberly Via, $500 each;
Loving Life Fellowship Scholarship: Ashanti Brown, $500;
Lillian Alexander McClung Scholarship: Shawn Shiflett, $1,000;

Roanoke Valley Wrestling Association Scholarship: Hunter Tallman, $1,000;

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation Scholarships: Merle Weaver Reid Scholarship, Cameron Frye, $1,000; Helen F. Dickson Scholarship: Abigail McDaniel, $750; Stacy Tacy, $250.
Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship: Omarija Rice, $500;

Institutional and National Scholarships
Ethan Forbes received the local scholarship from Virginia Military Institute for $3,552.
Amiah Hunter received several scholarships from Wingate University, including the Presidential Scholarship, totaling $30,000.
Jabari Williams was named a Panther Scholar at Ferrum College. He will receive $15,500 per year for all four years, totaling $62,000 in scholarships.
Cailin Johnson received the Highlander Distinction Award from Radford University, a $4,000 scholarship that is renewable for all four years, totaling $16,000.
Cailin also won the Horatio Alger Scholarship in a nationally competitive scholarship competition. She will receive $2,500 each year of college, totaling $10,000.
Shawn Shiflett won the Presidential Scholarship from Longwood University, worth $4,000 per year, totaling $16,000 over four years.
Anna Byer, after completing a competitive interview process, won the Welch Innovation Scholarship from the University of Charleston, the biggest scholarship at the school.
Anna’s scholarship is worth $20,000 per year, totaling $80,000.
