COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On April 21, at 1:15 p.m. at Alleghany High School, the Alleghany, Bath, Highland Bar Association (ABH Bar) will hold a “So You’re 18” panel discussion for the juniors and seniors from Alleghany and Covington. Boys Home students are included. The ABH bar is composed of all of the lawyers in the three counties.
According to Bill Wilson, one of the lawyers in the ABH Bar, the program is intended to be an initial resource of information regarding basic law–related references and a good summary of the various legal issues students may encounter upon leaving high school.
Wilson added, “This year, however, our Bar plans to give the students information about the “Opioid Drug Crisis” that is sweeping western and southwestern Virginia, particularly with regard to the drug fentanyl, which is killing people by overdose everywhere.
The Virginia State Bar’s Conference of Local and Specialty Bar Associations is the main sponsor of the program and is sending Dillina Stickley to introduce the program.
Jacob Wright, School Board Chairman of the Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, has endorsed the “So You’re 18” program and plans to speak to the students.
In addition, Karen Staunton, principal of Alleghany High School, will welcome everyone to the high school.
The panel members are as follows: Bill Wilson, attorney, moderator; Taylor Baker, attorney, Bath County; Ann Gardner, Alleghany County Commonwealth’s attorney; Bill Parks, attorney, Covington; Ingrid Barber, executive director, community services board; Karen Staunton, AHS principal; Jacob Wright, school board chairman; and Dillina Stickley, Virginia State Bar.
