Dear Editor,
Sunday, October 2 is the upcoming LIFE CHAIN to be held at the traffic light at the entrance to where Walmart is located. On the sidewalks, participants hold signs that proclaim a truth about abortion while silently praying for a change of heart in people in each passing vehicle. It begins at 2:30 and ends at 3:45 p.m.
Roe v Wade was overturned by the current US Supreme Court not long ago. Post Roe v Wade, the laws in our state of Virginia still allow for the killing of babies meeting these criteria: Conceived by rape – is this not a baby? Conceived by incest – is this not a baby? Child having “fetal impairment” – is this not a baby? Late term/third trimester abortion allowed if mothers health is endangered – emotionally distressed, morning sickness, headaches, etc. are reasons to kill ones baby? Mother’s life is endangered – is this an “exception” that needs to be cited in law?…..maybe.
Regarding “fetal impairment,” in Iceland there are few to none people with Down Syndrome. Pregnant Moms are “strongly urged” to have a “screening” done on their baby during the 11th to 14th week of pregnancy. The screening may determine an “increased likelihood of the fetus having Down Syndrome”. It appears, statistically, that whatever “counseling” is given after the results of this screening are revealed, that most/all of these babies are eliminated via abortion. So, Down Syndrome persons are not human beings in Iceland? Would we want the same for Virginians? Should physically or mentally challenged persons be denied a seat at the table of life?
Regarding “mothers life is endangered”. Cannot anything be done to save both mother and child (like providing special pre-natal care until the baby can live outside Mom’s womb in a NICU/newborn intensive care unit)? In the case of an ectopic pregnancy, the baby cannot survive, and if not sadfully removed, will cause the death of both self and Mom. In any other circumstance, the doctors should do all they can to save mother and child, and not be held to unreasonable account if both cannot be saved.
People need to know that a pregnant woman carries a baby inside her, a different body than her body…a baby’s body. Please consider participating in this upcoming LIFE CHAIN. If you need any additional details, please contact my husband John at 862-1917.
