October 26, 1931: Postmaster In W.Va. Wants To Quit
There is a job down at Long in the mountains several miles from here that anyone may have for the asking.
Ira Shockey, postmaster at Long for forty-three years and the oldest postmaster in West Virginia, in point of service is anxious and willing to relinquish his duties to somebody.
He recently notified the government to that effect but received a reply that he would have to keep the post as there wasn’t anyone that wanted it.
Long’s salary averages about ten cents a day.

October 26, 1946: Richmond Hotel Fire Does Little Damage
An early morning blaze in the hotel Richmond today caused little damage and no injuries were reported in the fire which brought seven engine and two truck companies in response to two alarms, according to Fire Chief John F. Finnegan.
Chief Finnegan said the fire originated in a fifth floor room occupied by Curtis Lemon of Roanoke, and quoted Lemon as saying he fell asleep in bed while smoking a cigarette, and awoke to find the foot of his bed ablaze and a part of the wall also burning.

October 26, 1971: College Departments Toured By Members Of Area Sorority
Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society met Wednesday evening at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, with 23 members present. Dr. Mary A. Thayer, president, presided and led the group in reading the collect.
Dr. Thayer announced that a brunch will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Shenandoah Club, in Roanoke. The Roanoke chapters of the Delta Kappa Gamma society will be guests. Speaker for the meeting will be the state president.
The program for the evening consisted of a tour of three departments of the college. Paul Guerra explained and demonstrated the equipment in the reading laboratory, and M. Elizabeth Scott conducted a tour of the library and explained that the library was a part of the total learning center. Mrs. Peggy Maydian pointed out the many advantages of the audio-visual equipment used at the college.
Hostesses for the evening were the social and hospitality committee, Miss Betty Lou Williams, chairman.

October 26, 1996: CMS Girls Blast Maury River, 40-12
The Clifton Middle School Mountaineers ran to another convincing win here Thursday afternoon with a 40-12 girls basketball decision over Maury River.
The winners led 12-1 at the quarter, 20-3 at intermission and 30-10 by the end of three.
Eleven different CMS players dotted the scoring column including Stacey Heighter (6), Shannon Brown (6), Stacey Nicely (5), Brittany Williams (5), Kahla Garris (4), Krystal Shelton (3), LeAnn Shifflett (3), Carol Putnam (2), Shannon Smith (2), Carol Putnam (2), Shannon Smith (2), Michele Alfred (2) and Stacey Heighter (2).
CMS will host Andrew Lewis on Tuesday at 5:30.

October 26, 2011: Entries Being Accepted For Iron Gate Parade
The 10th annual Town of Iron Gate Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m.
Line up for the parade will start at 12 p.m. on Tannery Drive at the former Acadia Polymers Plant.
The theme for this year’s parade will be “Alvin & The Chipmunks Christmas.”
Trophies will be awarded in many categories, including some new ones.
