Edward Lee Godfrey
Edward Lee Godfrey, a beloved soul, transitioned from this earthly realm on Monday, April 7th, 2024.
Born in Eagle Rock, VA, on August 22, 1941, Edward was the third of seven children born to the late Charles Godfrey and Gaynell Alice Godfrey. His roots were firmly planted in the Clifton Forge Virginia, where he received his education. Edward’s life journey took him to the battlefields of the Vietnam War in 1967, and he returned home in 1969, carrying both memories and scars. His unwavering commitment to duty and service left an indelible mark on those who knew him. For over two decades, Edward dedicated his labor to Virginia Dominion Power, where he excelled as a Master Mechanic. His skilled hands breathed life into engines, and his passion for auto repair, rebuilding, and refurbishing cars was legendary. Hot Rods and motorcycles were his canvas, and he painted them with love and precision. Beyond the grease-stained overalls, Edward had a heart that beat for the great outdoors. His love for hunting and fishing was as vast as the open sky. But it was his infectious smile that truly set him apart. Known affectionately as “4:30”, he was a master of wit, weaving infamous riddles, rhymes, and sayings into conversations. His laughter was contagious, and his humor a balm for weary souls. Edward’s journey was marked by both joy and sorrow.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Gaynell Godfrey, and his beloved wife, Dreama Godfrey. The heavens now echo with the laughter of three brothers: Nelson, Charles Jr., and Earsey Godfrey, and three sisters: Mary Young, Brenda Arnold, and Julia Johnson.
Yet, amidst the ache of loss, Edward’s legacy lives on. His daughter, Celeste Allen (Michael) Covington, VA, and son, Edward Godfrey Jr. (Lisa) Glasgow, VA, carry his spirit forward. Their hearts hold the memories of a father who loved fiercely. Two Stepsons, Timothy Cooper of Florida and Troy Cooper of Roanoke, VA share in this legacy, as do Edward’s four cherished grandchildren: Tahira, Tiana, Tamia, and Andon. In the tapestry of family, there is also a half-brother, Vincent Cooper, Clifton Forge, VA. Woven throughout are nieces, nephews, cousins, and a vast network of friends who remember Edward’s laughter, his wisdom, and the way he made every day a little brighter.
As the sun sets on Edward Lee Godfrey’s earthly chapter, we honor his memory, celebrate his life, and find solace in the echoes of his laughter that linger in our hearts, until we meet again. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 1:00PM in the Chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
