With spring just around the corner, it brings with it the promise of March-turned-April showers, the budding of daffodils and dandelions, tiny, fluffy baby chickens, and the arrival of spring sports. One such sport on the docket for the new Alleghany Cougar is the Varsity Girls’ Softball team.

Prior to the merge, last year, the Alleghany Mountaineers held their own and ended the season with a strong 16-8 overall finish, placing third in the Three Rivers District (TRD) and boasting an impressive 8-5 regional record. In that same season, they rivaled the Covington Cougars in two games, defeating them each time. Meanwhile, the Covington Cougars, despite their losses to the Alleghany Mountaineers, ended their season with an overall record of 13-10, but had a regional record of 9-1, and finished first in the Pioneer District.

It will be interesting to see how the now Alleghany Cougars fare in the TRD this year with the new combination of teams who both finished strong in their divisions last year. My gut instinct drives me to believe that this group of girls in this newly merged team will treat us all to an impressive season. The Varsity Lady Cougars will see their first-ever game on Wednesday, March 13, and their first home game to be played at Alleghany High School (AHS) on March 15 at 5:00 p.m. against the Wilson Memorial Green Hornets.
