L. Douglas “Doug” Honaker
Doug Honaker, 61, of Organ Cave, WV passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024, at home surrounded by family after courageously battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia since May 4, 2023.
Doug was born August 16, 1962, in Ronceverte, WV to the late Sterling Honaker and Wanda Young Fullen. He was preceded in death by step-father Cecil Fullen, who had a major impact on his life. He was the grandson of the late John and Mary Honaker and he took honor in continuing the legacy of the family home-place. He was preceded in death by uncle Lonis Honaker, aunt Phyllis Honaker, cousin Denny Powell and cousin Jennifer Alan. Also preceded by grandfather Basil Young, grandmother Louise Boone Young, uncle and aunt Pete and Lois “Pat” Alan, cousin Mary Ann Level, infant niece Melissa Betz, beloved nephew John “Jamie” Honaker, and his eldest daughter Elizabeth’s mother Patricia Cole.
Throughout Doug’s life he was a hard-working man of many trades. Community involvement was important to him, not strictly in organized sanctions, but he was active with the Ruitain Club and most fond of Penny Pitch with the Jaycees. His community also included Covington, VA and the people he connected with span the country. Being a fun-loving man, many people knew Doug from roller skating and bowling, operating the go-kart track, or cutting a rug on the dance floor of a music show. No one can see a ’66-77 Ford Bronco without thinking of Doug Honaker, affectionately known to many as “Bronco Dug”. His passion for them was infectious, and he was instrumental in local mud racing for decades. Doug never knew a stranger and loved the opportunity to have a conversation in passing and lend a helping hand to anyone at any time. Doug’s last act of service was donating his body to the WVSOM Human Gift Registry.
Doug leaves behind daughters Nicole “Nikki” Honaker and Elizabeth Honaker Smith Vance (Jeff Vance), and granddaughter Lyla Smith. He is also survived by siblings Patty Betz, Darrell Honaker, Donna Wykle; nephews and nieces Adam Wykle, Michelle Hall (Ronnie Hall), Josh Wykle (Tonya Wykle), Darrell M. Honaker (Jordan Honaker), Sarah Dyess (Danny Dyess); great-nephews and nieces Jackson Honaker, McKinleigh Williams, Mason Williams, Landon Dyess, Chloey, Ella, Amrey, Joslyn Wykle, Elijah Honaker; mother to Nikki, Sue Johnson; special friend, Linda Lewis; also many more family members and friends who were like family.
