Not So Quiet On Eastern Front
The unusual picture below shows a shell bursting in front of a Chinese trench during the civil war of a couple of years ago. Scenes almost an exact duplicate of this are now being re-enacted in Shanghai, with Chinese troops entrenched at Chapei, the native section of the city, and Japanese warships throwing shells from the Yangtze River and Shanghai Harbor, in an attempt to shatter their morale.

P.H. Kemper, 1944 Hero Now On Police Justice Bench
At 8 p.m., March 30, 1944, city policeman P.H. Kemper stepped from a car on the corner of Monroe Avenue and Chestnut Street to arrest James Rodgers of Buchanan who had reportedly been widely shooting off a pistol in the area. Rodgers tried to shoot it out with Kemper and fired four shots at him point blank, forcing Kemper to return his fire. Not surprisingly, this is the one incident from his almost 19 years on the Covington police force that Kemper, now Covngton’s new police justice, remembers most clearly. Kemper retired from his position as a sergeant on the city police force last Thursday to take the police justice position to which he was appointed to City Council in December 1961.
