LOW MOOR — Get trained and save a life!
Heading off to college for the first time or returning to college can be fun and adventurous but also a stressful time. You want to make sure you have everything you need — backpack, paper, pencils, computer — and REVIVE! Training.
The Alleghany Highlands YMCA Healthy Highlands program, Alleghany Highlands Community Services and LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany invite our local college students to attend REVIVE! Training on Monday, Aug. 7, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.
This training is free and dinner will be provided. There will be giveaways and door prizes for those attending. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
What is REVIVE!? REVIVE! is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s program that provides training on how to recognize an opioid overdose, spot risk factors for overdose and respond to an overdose with the administration of naloxone (Narcan).
“I wanted my daughter and her classmates to complete this training before they go off to college this fall, and I thought others might be interested,” said Dr. Sandra McHenry, Healthy Highlands program leader. “A quick response and the right training can save a life.”
Opioids are a class of drugs that includes heroin, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl and others. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 100,000 individuals died from an opioid-involved overdose in 2021, and at least one study has found that bystanders were present in more than one-third of overdoses involving opioids.
“Even though a student may not use illegal substances, one never knows how or when they might encounter someone who may need Narcan to save their life, so it’s important that parents understand the value of this training,” added Alleghany Highlands YMCA CEO Jennifer Unroe.
Following the training, participants will receive an emergency response kit that includes naloxone at no cost. Call the Alleghany Highlands YMCA at (540) 962-9622 for more information or to register.
