On Tuesday, March 19, spring made its way onto Casey Field, treating fans and players to warmer temperatures than the past few games. Nearing 50-degree temperatures, the Alleghany Cougars took the field against the Riverheads Gladiators in what would be a scoreless game up until the bottom of the 5th.
Each team played hard, but the Alleghany Cougars would prevail in the end with a score of 2-1 against Riverheads. Pitcher Hunter DePriest led the Cougars, landing 21 outs by himself.
Though the first 4 innings concluded with no boards on the board for either team, senior Chris Harden ended the streak by fielder’s choice (FC), which drove in a run for the Alleghany Cougars. Hunter DePriest followed suit, hitting a sacrifice fly ball, driving in another run. The fifth inning concluded with an Alleghany lead of 2-0 over the Riverheads Gladiators.
Riverheads attempted to get back into the game at the top of the sixth, scoring one unearned run against the Alleghany Cougars. It would be the only run they would receive all game.
Apart from the one unearned run, the Varsity Alleghany Cougars only allowed four hits over the course of seven innings, nailed a double play, and left pitcher Hunter DePriest striking out 7 and walking one. Offensively, Eli Weese led in Alleghany hits, going 1-for-1 at the plate.
This was the second time for the Alleghany Varsity Baseball Team to face off against the Riverheads Gladiators. The first being nearly a week ago on March 13 for the first regular season game. In that game, the Cougars would fall 2-3 to the Gladiators, making this rematch victory even sweeter.
Currently, the Alleghany Cougars are 2-1 in regular season games with their next games set for Monday, March 25, at 5:30pm at Casey Field against Buffalo Gap and the following on Wednesday, March 27, at 5pm (away) against the Carroll County Cavaliers.
