I have not felt well, and certainly not felt happy, lately.
So, I’ve decided that needs to change.
I will herein list the things about which I can be happy.
The awful, crippling pain in my side is gone, thanks to chiropractic. And, I probably do not have kidney stones. That’s really something that makes me happy.
Throughout the winter, I have kept my eye out my office window, because I noticed an abandoned hummingbird nest out there. I am not certain it’s a hummingbird nest, but really, it’s almost too small to be anything else.
Lots of birds make their nests in the same places they did last spring and summer. They do this year after year. So, I am really hopeful a mama hummingbird will come back to her old house and set it up and raise a new tiny family. I have never seen a baby hummingbird.
I am finally able to take my walk again, after about two months of being housebound, either by the snowy ice on the road, or the bitter, windy cold, or that cursed pain in my back. Now, I am out there again and, I’ll tell you, I don’t recall feeling so happy as I did last week when I made my first trek down the lane. I was almost giddy! And there, in the field just where I’d hoped they’d be, were all 12 horses. I love those horses – all horses, really – even if these particular horses do not care one whit about me. They won’t even come to the fence for apples! They’re antisocial, but lovely to look at, still the same.
I’ll bet we’re all happy that gas prices have gone down a few cents. Who would have thought we’d be happy to find gas priced at $3.95 a gallon? It almost makes me want to drive again!
Speaking of prices, the grocery store has become a scary, sad place to go as of late. I don’t remember when I last had a steak. That doesn’t mean I don’t crave one. But, setbacks can result in discoveries, and I’ve discovered flank steak. It costs a lot less than a rib eye or tenderloin, and if you just cook it three minutes on each side, you can trick your food-trigger into thinking it’s close to the same. It makes a great steak sandwich.
When it comes to watching television, we all have our guilty pleasures. I’m happy Survivor is back on the air, even though I find not one likeable person to root for among the contenders. And I’m thrilled to find American Idol is back. Let me tell you, folks, if you want to feel good about something, just watch this show. It is filled with youngsters – many of them with surprising talent – from places deep in the hills, out on the farms, and in faraway cities. And when they win a spot in the line-up, their joy and that of their families watching breathlessly at home can sure make me smile. The judges are all very likeable and kind stars – Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry – and they’re not snarky like, say, Simon Cowell, who seemed to enjoy hurting young feelings.
It’s spring. The birds are back, flitting everywhere and building nests. I am walking down the lane again. I am not in pain. Gee, there’s a lot to be happy about. I gotta love that!
