House Labor Bill Is Given Final Touches
House Labor Committee Republicans added finishing touches today to a bill to wipe out the closed shop and industry-wide bargaining and to curb such nationwide strikes as the telephone tie-up. It also would outlaw jurisdictional strikes and secondary boycotts. The bill is still subject to committee approval-some Democratic members are sure to vote against it-and to changes in many details.

Ex-Gov. Battle Is Dead At 81
John Stewart Battle, the mild-mannered son of a Baptist minister who twice was thrust onto the national scene in his four-year term as governor of Virginia, is dead at the age of 81, the victim of a massive stroke. Battle, who served from 1950 to 1954 during the period when the Democratic organization headed by the late Sen. Harry F. Byrd Sr. called the political shots in Virginia, died early Sunday. He had suffered the stroke Friday after being seriously ill the last five months.

Newseum Promotes Relations Between The Media And Public
A new museum about news is offering Americans the chance to step into reporters’ shoes for a while. From that vantage point, the public will be able to experience what it’s like to be a TV news anchor or radio sportscaster, to investigate a story or to grapple with ethical dilemmas. Opinion polls indicate that the public generally doesn’t trust journalists, and playing reporter for a day may not alter that perception much, but officials at the Newseum hope the facility will at least help the media and the public understand each other better.
Covington Council Approves Jail Pact
Covington City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve the proposed 30-year cooperative jail agreement with Alleghany County, Clifton Forge, and Bath County. City Manager John M. Holpe said during the executive session which followed the regular April council meeting, it was decided to add the jail agreement to the agenda and was voted on during the regular session.

Mike Wallace,”60 Minutes” Interrogator, Dead At Age 93
“Mike Wallace is here to see you.” The “60 Minutes” newsman had such a fearsome reputation that it was often said that those were the most dreaded words in the English language, capable of reducing an interview subject to a shaking, sweating mess.Wallace, who won his 21st and final Emmy Award at 89, died Saturday in the Canaan, Conn., care facility where he had lived the last few years of his life. He was 93.
This is the Alleghany County Courthouse that was built in 1877 by H.J. Shomo and John H. Plunkett, both of Augusta County. It was constructed at a cost of $7,200 and was the second courthouse in the courthouse square on Main Street in Covington. The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will be celebrating the 100th year of the current courthouse with a ceremony on Sunday, April 15 at 2 p.m. in the Circuit Courtroom.
