For the second time this week, the Riverheads Gladiators held the Covington Cougars (1-2) to one-hit. Following a 12-2 victory over the Cougars at home on Tuesday, the Gladiators on the road took down the Cougars again on Thursday, 22-0.
The Gladiators finished with 13 hits in the game that came from five different players. All five batters that had hits for the Gladiators had a multiple-hit performance.
Camden Huffer (3-for-4) had a big day at the plate as he put together a three-hit and game-high five RBI performance. Logan Austin (2-for-4), was just as good at the plate for the Gladiators, as he had a four RBI day. Aidan Miller (2-for-3), was not only the winning pitcher, but he helped himself on offense with a three RBI day while collecting two hits and scoring three runs. Bennett Dunlap (3-for-4), added two RBI’s in the Gladiators victory.
Miller (W), picked up the win for the Gladiators as he pitched three shutout innings, while striking out two. Ryan Farris, closed the game out by pitching in two scoreless innings, while striking out three.
While the pitching was sensational again for the Gladiators, the Cougars bats struggled at the plate for a second straight game. The Cougars went 1-for-15 on Thursday following a 1-for-19 outing on Tuesday. The lone hit for the Cougars came in the fourth inning. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Brady Howard (1-for-2), singled to right field which not only put the Cougars in the hit column, but also broke up the Gladiators potential no-hitter.
The Cougars used a season-high six pitchers on Thursday. Starter, Levi Dressler (L), took the loss for the Cougars, as he surrendered five runs (three earned) in just one inning of work.
The Gladiators set the tone of the game in the first inning after the team put up five runs in the inning. L. Austin, highlighted the inning bringing in two runs on a single to left field.
Already ahead 5-0, the Gladiators added five more runs in the second inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead. The Gladiators had five players in the inning collect RBI’s.
With a 10-run lead, the game was put away in the third inning following a 12-run inning to put the Gladiators ahead 22-0. 10 batters in the third inning collected RBI’s for the Gladiators.
The Cougars will look to snap their losing streak on Monday when the team hosts the Alleghany Mountaineers at Casey Field at 5:00 p.m.
