Today’s Headline: Officers Seize Still & Mash On Castille Run.
Alleghany County and State ABC officers destroyed a 400-gallon still and 1,200 gallons of mash yesterday afternoon near Castille Run.
State ABC Inspector C.R. Pepper and Deputy Sheriff Meeks were making an investigation of stills reported in that vicinity yesterday when they came upon the outfit by accident.
The officers heard the still working while some distance off and decided to make a raid. Two boys were caught at the still but two men who were operating it escaped in an automobile.

Today’s Headline: Miss Jo Ann Calhoun Is Chosen As Miss Covington.
The third time proved a charm for 16-year-old Jo Ann Calhoun Saturday night when the blond, blue-eyed beauty was chosen Miss Covington of 1961-62 at the annual Covington Acquatic Carnival.
Twice before, Miss Calhoun had entered the contest but had failed to be selected among the top three winners on each occasion. This year, it was a different story as the graceful winner received the crown and royal robe from Miss Brenda Cottrell, the 1960-61’s winner.
Miss Elden McCallister was selected as the second-place winner with Miss Sandra Dodd receiving third place in the pageant.

Today’s Headline: Clifton Forge Council Rejects Insurance Bid.
City council has opted not to pursue membership in the Virginia Municipal League’s liability insurance pool.
During a called meeting of council yesterday evening, no action was taken toward joining the VML pool that would have cost the city $74,307 in premiums for one year of coverage.
Norman G. Stabb, senior vice commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be guest speaker Aug. 9 when the Covington VFW Post celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Get ready to blow out the candles – a Covington landmark is celebrating a milestone birthday.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Covington Municipal Pool at the Main Street Park and to celebrate the occasion the city of Covington Parks and Recreation Department will host a Happy 70th Birthday Bath Friday, Aug. 4 from 6 p.m. until dark.
