Today’s Headline: Rayon Worker Rides To Death On Motorcycle.
Thomas Cumbo, 19-year-old employee of the Industrial Rayon Corporation in Covington, was instantly killed at 1:45 yesterday morning when the motorcycle upon which he was riding double overturned on U.S. Route 60 20 miles west of Covington.
The youth was riding a motorcycle allegedly operated by William Dressler of Dry Run. The accident is said to have occurred when the motorcycle went out of control as it failed to take one of the curves in the road.
A crushed skull killed Cumbo instantly.

Today’s Headline: Referendum Expected To Determine Water Improvements.
City council unanimously instructed City Manager Earnest L. Thacker to proceed with preliminary arrangements for a referendum to determine improvements to the city’s water system at last night’s called council meeting.
Thacker had pointed out that if initial steps were taken properly the referendum could be placed on the ballot for the November general election.

Today’s Headline: Art Show Runs Through Saturday.
A painting by Jean Cauthen Morris of Bedford entitled “Chairs” has captured the $500 Best In Show award at the 22nd annual Bath County Art Show, which began a seven-day run at Valley Elementary School July 20-27 from 1:30-5 p.m.
Complaints from a citizen have prompted Iron Gate Town Council to consider updating sections of the town code dealing with noise and nuisance control.

Today’s Headline: Alleghany Relay For Life Nets $29,773.
The Alleghany Highlands Unit of the American Cancer Society held its wrap-up meeting for the annual Relay For Life campaign Tuesday evening in the board room at Alleghany Regional Hospital.
This year’s Relay For Life was held June 3 at Alleghany High School’s Mountaineer Field.
