Barbara Gorman Smith, 77, of 3047 Wildwood Dr., Covington, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Mark Hatton Smith Jr., Feb. 6, 201l.
She was born Oct. 7, 1933, in Clifton Forge, the daughter of the late Bernard Richard Gorman and lone Hicks Morefield.
Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Clifton Forge High School Class of 1952 and a graduate of the C&O School of Radiologic Technology. She was a member of South Covington United Methodist Church and served her church faithfully.
Barbara enjoyed scouting and was very active with Cub Scout Pack No. 26 on the local level, as well as on the district level with the Stonewall Jackson Council receiving the Silver Fawn Award.
She and her husband, Mark, both volunteered at the Charles P. Jones Memorial Library, helping anywhere they were needed.
Barbara was a very active member of the Jackson River Garden Club, serving as president from 1995 until 1999, and a very active member of the Daughters of American Revolution.
She is survived by one son, M. Kyle Smith of Culpeper; three grandchildren, Jessica Marie Watts, Kathryn Elizabeth Smith, Nicholas Mark Smith; one great-grandchild, Hailey Marie Watts; three brothers, Richard Alfred Gorman and wife, Brenda, of Los Alamitos, Calif., William Hicks Gorman and wife, Frankie, of Lynchburg, Raymond Lloyd Gorman of Harrisburg, Ill. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mark H. Smith Jr., and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Diane Smith; and one brother, Dr. Robert Collins Gorman.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at South Covington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chuck Cole officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Gene Lee, Larry Schoppmeyer, Norman Martin, Nicholas Smith, Chad Watts and Jared Carpenter.
The family will receive friends this evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.
