Kai Michael-Alexander Van Ness
Kai Michael-Alexander Van Ness, of 2356 South Carpenter Drive, Covington, Virginia died Friday, May 3, 2024 at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany, Low Moor. He was eight years old.
Kai was born August 7, 2015 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He was a son of Kevin Lamar Van Ness and Keiara La Shay Bretz. He was a student at Mountain View Elementary School and loved playing video games and basketball, having snacks, and spending time with his family and friends. He was easily recognized by his smile, and was absolutely the best big brother. The family’s motto going forward will be “Be Kind Like Kai”.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Dolly Van Ness and his great grandfather, Michael Ellison.
He is survived by a large and loving family: his parents, Kevin Van Ness and Keiara Bretz of Covington; three sisters, Taylor Van Ness, Raina Van Ness, and Ka Naya Carr, and three brothers, Kash Van Ness, Keegan Bretz, and Benjamin Tingler, all of Covington; a baby sibling arriving in November; two aunts, Dawnyale “Patty” Key and Saundra Bostics, and two uncles, Ryan Kern and Darrion Quarles, all of Clifton Forge; grandfather, Kevin Wilson of Washington D.C.; great grandmother, Mary Ellison; maternal influences, Shellsea Simmons and Sarah Reed; step grandfather, Gregory “Muggs” Key; cousins, Adonis Mason and Aidan Bostic; his wonderful teacher, Kelsey Meyer Nicely; a number of cousins and aunts; and all his friends and classmates.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Stephanie Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Central Advent Christian Cemetery, Clifton Forge. The family will visit with friends on Monday afternoon from 12:00 PM until the time of service at Nicely Funeral Home, and following the service at the home of Nick and Brie Swartz, 630 McCormick Blvd, Clifton Forge.
