ALLEGHANY COUNTY, VA (VR) – An individual has allegedly been passing counterfeit $100 bills in areas of Virginia and West Virginia. The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Officer released the following statement:
“On January 23, 2024, at approximately 6 a.m. the Alleghany County Sheriff’s office was contacted by the clerk at the Shell station on 810 E. Madison St.
“The caller stated that an unknown black male placed 9 cartons of cigarettes on the counter and then placed 7 $100 bills on the counter and exited the building. The total value of the cigarettes was $726.57. The bills were discovered to be counterfeit.
“The suspect is identified as a black male in his 40s, with facial hair, wearing grey sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
“The suspect was seen occupying a newer model Kia four-door. No registration was able to be obtained.
“Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office has also been informed that prior to this offense, the Greenbrier Sheriff’s Office was contacted for the same offense, and at approximately 8:01 a.m. the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office was also notified of the same type of offense. This leads investigators to believe that the suspects are heading East and then possibly North on I-81. Businesses are advised to be extra cautious when those types of suspicious purchases are made using large denominations of money.
