ELLISTON – Trailing 8-7 Eastern Montgomery rallied with a 6-run bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Bath County in a Pioneer District baseball game last Thursday in Elliston.
The first two innings were rather bleak for Bath County as they fell behind four runs following a 4-run second by East Mont.
Trailing 4-0 the Chargers snapped their scoreless streak. BCHS had not scored a run since their season opener and ended a 17-inning scoreless streak with a run scored by Jake Boguess (2-for-5) in the top of the 3rd inning.
In the top of the fourth inning Bath County would push across five runs to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Boguess had a 2-run single, while East Mont’s defense helped the cause with a throwing error that led to the tying and go-ahead runs to score.
The lead for BCHS wouldn’t last as EMHS retook the lead in the home half of the fourth inning. Coltin Conner (2-for-4) and Nate Oliver (2-for-3) each had RBI singles for the Mustangs in the inning.
Once again trailing for a third time in the game Bath County would fight back and score twice in the fifth inning to retake the lead at 8-7. A.J. St. Clair (3-for-3) who led the Chargers with three hits tied the game with an RBI single. BCHS would retake the lead on a fielding error by East Mont’s catcher.
With Boguess coming in relief of Issac Ingram (ND/0-for-4), Boguess worked a quick 1-2-3 inning as he shut down the Mustangs offense and kept the 1-run intact for the Chargers.
Bath County’s offense could not capitalize after shutting down East Mont’s offense in the previous inning and kept the momentum going in the top of the sixth inning as they were held in check as the Mustangs kept the game at one run.
Then the bats came to life for EMHS as they scored six times in the home half of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and only one out Drew Smith (0-for-1) was hit by a pitch which brought in the tying run. Caleb Jones (0-for-3) would then ground into a fielder’s choice, however the go-ahead run scored for the Mustangs.
Despite surrendering the lead Bath County was only an out away from getting out of the inning without further damage. However, Tyler Atkinson (1-for-3) and Marshall Tate (1-for-5) each hit two-run singles to give the Mustangs a 13-8 lead.
Following the 6-run sixth inning, East Mont would not relinquish the lead despite Bath County getting a pair of runners on base in their final at bats.
The 1-5 batters in the lineup for East Mont was a nightmare for Bath County as they were a combined 6-for-19 with 10 RBI’s.
After being on the wrong end of back-to-back no-hitters the Chargers bats woke up against the Mustangs as they outhit EMHS 11-10 despite the 1-run loss.
Owen Perdue (2-for-4) and Nate Hunt (2-for-3) each had a pair of hits for Bath County. Perdue and Greyson Walton (0-for-2) both had two runs scored.
