Robert King “Bob” Bennett
Mr. Robert King “Bob” Bennett, age 88, of Covington, died Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Jean Leibee Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was born July 12, 1935, in Huntington, WV, the son of the late Justice Dewey and Betty King Bennett. He earned a football scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky where he played football under the direction of Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Early in his career, Bob worked as a high school football coach and history teacher in Kentucky. He served as Mayor of Frankfort, KY from 1972 until 1976. He continued to work as a salesman for McGraw Hill where he sold textbooks for thirty-eight years before his retirement. Bob was a longtime member of Covington Baptist Church.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Louise Bennett of Mechanicsville; son, Robert King Bennett, II and wife, Cynthia Beamer Bennett of Covington; three grandchildren, J.E. Bennett Dickerson (Rilee), Emily Louise Davis and Madison King Bennett; two great-grandchildren, Pepper-Mae Louise and Forrest Edward Dickerson; a sister, Helen Kozee; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by two brothers, Matt Bennett and George Bennett and two sisters, Frances Anne Holman and Betty Jo Atkins.
A private graveside service was conducted at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Pastor Frank Sizemore, Jr. officiating.
The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Boiling Springs Fire and Rescue, 5407 Potts Creek Road, Covington, VA 24426 who were faithful to come numerous times to provide wonderful care.
