COVINGTON – It appeared that the Covington Lumberjacks (5-6) were headed for their third straight loss.

After falling behind five runs early, the Lumberjacks rallied to score 13 straight runs in a home win on Wednesday, June 14th as they handed the Staunton Braves a 13-5 loss at Casey Field.

In the win, the Lumberjacks came out swinging with 17 hits in the victory. Gregory Melo led all batters with a four-hit performance at the plate. Kendra Noriega and Wesley Parker each had three RBI’s, and each had home runs.

It was a wild third inning. Staunton added their fifth run of the inning to take a 5-0 lead. Then Covington put together a six-run bottom of the inning to take the only lead of the game that they needed.

Noriega started off the third inning rally by connecting on a two-run home run which plated the first pair of runs to score for the Lumberjacks.

A few batters later Jackson Toberman drove in Covington’s third run of the game and now cut the deficit down to two runs.

With a pair of runners on base, the next batter stepping up to the plate, Parker, delivered the go-ahead three-run home run to put the Jacks’ ahead 6-5.

Two innings later Covington added five more runs with a five-run fifth inning to build an 11-5 lead. Five Lumberjacks were credited with RBI’s in the inning.

The 13 runs scored was Covington’s second most of the season. The team scored 14 runs in opening day against this same Braves team. It’s also just the second time during the season that the Lumberjacks have scored 10 or more runs.

Jacob Heath was the winning pitcher for Covington as he improved to 2-0. Heath tossed 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen where he struck out a pair.

Joey Parliment, Tank Yaghoubi, and Michael McKinney each had two hits for Staunton, while their run support came from five different players.
