COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany’s JV softball team jumped out early but could not hold off Wilson Memorial in a 15-7 loss Friday.

The Cougars built a 4-0 lead in the second inning behind aggressive base running and timely hitting. Jemma Rogers opened the frame with a single before Maddie Harmon reached on an error. McKenlee Knick followed with a bunt single that scored Rogers, and Abby Lindsey delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run triple to center to push the lead to 3-0. Lindsey later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

Lydia Herstine controlled the circle early for Alleghany, striking out eight batters through the first four innings. Wilson Memorial was held scoreless through the first two innings as Herstine repeatedly worked out of trouble with strikeouts.

Wilson Memorial answered with a five-run third inning to take a 5-4 lead, but Alleghany responded in the bottom half when Elizabeth Bazzrea scored on a sacrifice fly from Harmon to tie the game at 5-5.

The Hornets pulled away in the fourth inning with six runs on a series of singles, walks and defensive miscues to build an 11-5 advantage.

Alleghany continued to battle offensively throughout the game. Herstine finished with multiple hits, while Bazzrea added two doubles. Lindsey also collected a hit and two RBIs, and Knick reached base multiple times and scored twice. Kardyn Skidmore entered in relief and struck out six batters over the final three innings for the Cougars.
