FISHERSVILLE, Va. (VR) – The Lady Varsity Cougars stayed within striking distance most of the night, but a four-run fourth inning proved costly in a 4-0 loss to Wilson Memorial.
Emma Skidmore turned in another strong performance in the circle for the Cougars, recording nine strikeouts across six innings. Skidmore kept Wilson Memorial scoreless through the first three innings and worked out of multiple jams early to keep the game even.
Alleghany created scoring opportunities throughout the night but could not come up with the timely hit. The Cougars threatened in the first inning after Skidmore was hit by a pitch and Kaylee Nicely worked a walk. Peyton Broughman added a single in the second inning, while Nicely lined a base hit in the sixth.
The Cougars continued to battle late into the game. Brooklyn Taylor singled in the sixth inning and Maddy Lowry ripped a double to left field in the seventh to give Alleghany another scoring chance. Emma Skidmore later drew a walk to put two runners aboard, but Wilson Memorial escaped the inning to preserve the shutout.
Lowry finished with a double, while Nicely, Taylor and Broughman each collected hits for Alleghany. Defensively, the Cougars held Wilson Memorial scoreless through three innings before the Hornets capitalized on a fourth-inning rally to score all four of their runs.
Despite the loss, Alleghany continued to show solid pitching and defensive play throughout the contest, highlighted by Skidmore’s nine-strikeout effort in the circle.
