In a Thursday night edition of high school football, the Alleghany Mountaineers (4-4/0-3) lost their third in a row following a 31-6 Three Rivers District loss on the road to the Glenvar Highlanders (5-3/3-1).
The Mountaineers played hard until the very end.
Despite the score, the Mountaineers played the Highlanders tough the entire first half and kept them off the scoreboard until there was under nine minutes left in the first half when Tyler Pierce split the upright for a Highlander field goal. A great defensive goal line stand forced the Highlanders to kick the field goal.
While the Highlanders were kept off the scoreboard for majority of the first half, so were the Mountaineers who were shutout the entire first half.
With under two minutes remaining in the first half, Brody Dawyot connected with Nick Woodson for the first of two touchdowns between the duo. Pierce’s extra point gave the Highlanders a 10-0 lead.
The Highlanders would get the ball back before the end of the first half and as they were looking to extend their lead, Hayden Knighton picked off Dawyot to close the first half.
In the second half, the Mountaineers struggles continued to get on the scoreboard, credit the Highlanders defense, however, the Mountaineers defense also continued to play well. The Mountaineers kept the Highlanders off the scoreboard for nearly the first eight minutes of the second half before they extended their lead to 17 following Pierce’s touchdown reception on a pass from Dawyot.
It wouldn’t take long for the Highlanders to get back on the scoreboard as two minutes later, Dawyot connected with Woodson for the second time. Pierce’s extra point extended the Highlanders lead to 24-0.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers finally would end their scoring drought on Dalton Griffith’s fifth touchdown rush of the season. The Mountaineers cut the lead down to 18 at 24-6 as they did not convert on their 2pt attempt following the touchdown.
The Highlanders would add another touchdown to the scoreboard following a fourth quarter rushing touchdown from Jackson Camper. The Highlanders scoring would end following Pierce’s extra point as they took a 31-6 lead.
For the Mountaineers, Garrett Via, who is closing in breaking several school records was held out of the end zone for just the second time this season. Despite not reaching the end zone, Via did put together another 100-yard rush game as he finished with 102 for the game.
Following his 102-yard game, Via has now moved up to third all-time for a single season in Alleghany High School history. Via now has 1,259 rushing yards on the season as he surpassed Bryan Hamm who had 1,207 in 1985.
Meanwhile, Griffith once again put together a solid performance as he had 36 rushing yards along with the Mountaineers only touchdown of the game.
Dawyot led the Highlanders to victory with his three touchdown performance and 201 passing yards.
The Mountaineers will look to bounce back and snap their three-game losing streak on Friday as they remain on the road and head to Carroll County to take on the Cavaliers (1-6/0-3) in a big district match. The Cavaliers did not play last week as they were on their bye week.
