This past weekend was a busy one for the DSLCC Roadrunners (11-10).
The team traveled to Tennessee, then to Georgia, and back to Tennessee in a span of three days.
During their three games over the weekend, the Roadrunners lost two out of their three games, which dropped their record to 11-10 on the season.
The Roadrunners, following a 95-80 loss on Sunday to Walters State College Senators (14-11), have now lost seven of their last nine.
The last time the Roadrunners were close to a .500 record, was at the beginning of the season when the team was 3-2.
Despite the loss on Sunday to Walters State College, the Roadrunners, were given a big boost in the return of Jaylen Hudson, who scored a game-high 31 points. Hudson, had missed the previous five games.
Much like the Roadrunners, the Senators, had a busy day of traveling on Saturday as well. The Senators had a seven-hour bus ride back from Dyersburg, TN, following their Saturday game to get ready for the Roadrunners on Sunday.
The Senators, were led by Riley Cooper’s team-high 21 points in the win. Cooper, scored 13 of those points in the second half as the Senators outscored the Roadrunners by 12 points for the double digit victory.
Among the leaders for the Senators, along with Cooper, Destin Barker, who played his best game of the season for his team, as he dropped in a season-high of 20 points, with 17 coming in the second half. Down the stretch of the game, Barker knocked down several big three-pointers that helped seal the Senators win.
The Roadrunners, who trailed for the majority of the first half, kept the game within striking distance. Trailing 35-28, the Roadrunners, closed the gap by outscoring the Senators 13-9 in the final few minutes of the first half to close the gap to three points at 44-41.
Early in the second half, the Senators seemed to start pulling away from the game as they took a 56-48 lead. The Roadrunners though would not go away as the team went on an 8-2 scoring run to cut the lead down to two points at 58-56.
The Senators quickly regained momentum and took a 62-56 lead on back to back fast break slam dunks from Barker and Brandon Kabuya-Mpoyi.
As quick as the Senators regained momentum, the Roadrunners continued to fight and scored five unanswered points to get within one point at 62-61.
The turning point of the game came with just under nine minutes left. Barker, knocked down a three-pointer to extend the Senators lead to 69-64. It would be followed by steal by Deovaunta Williams, who was fouled while attempting a layup. Williams knocked down both free-throws to take a 71-64 lead. For the rest of the game, the closest the Roadrunners knocked down their deficit to was five points as the Senators maintained their lead in the final few minutes of the game.
In the loss, the Roadrunners, knocked down 12 three-pointers.
The final stretch of the regular season does not get much easier for the Roadrunners, who have lost seven of their last nine games. In the teams final six regular season games, four of them will be on the road.
The Roadrunners are back home this Friday against Christendom College at 7:30 p.m.
