Today’s Headline: Fight Injuries Prove Fatal To C&O Lineman.
Francis Kenney of Covington died at noon yesterday in a Montgomery, W.Va., hospital from a skull fracture sustained on Saturday afternoon when it is alleged a man named Callaghan struck him in the forehead with a cant hook.
Callaghan is under arrest, according to a report obtained from Hinton this morning and is being held in jail in Fayette County. Both men were C&O linemen, members of S.D. Pickett’s force, which is engaged in reconstructing a telegraph line between Gauley Bridge and Montgomery.
Callaghan was sub-foreman under Pickett and is thought to have once lived in or near Clifton Forge.

Today’s Headline: Simmons Gets Commendation USAF Medal.
Airman First Class Elmer B. Simmons, assigned to the Headquarters Squadron 18th Tactical Fighter Wing, Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal by Major General John R. Sutherland at a parade given in honor of Airman Simmons on July 15, 1961.
The award was for meritorious service and devotion to work during his tour Feb. 1, 1959 through Jan. 15, 1961 at Strategic Air Command, Beale Air Force Base, California.
According to the city engineer’s office, an estimated 75 Covington homeowners or businessmen have not yet secured their house or building numerals from that office.

Today’s Headline: Mock Disaster Held At Bath County Airport.
Fog and thunderstorms added a touch of realism to a mock disaster staged at Ingalls Field Saturday.
The drill was sponsored by the airport and carried out by fire and rescue units from all over the Highlands.
The disaster involving a crash between a commuter airplane and a pickup truck on the runway was responded to by approximately 25 fire and rescue units and 125 personnel.
Audrey Gutshall has been appointed manager, Homestead Printing and Promotion, at The Homestead Hotel.

Today’s Headline: Sale Of Clifton Forge Radio Station Pending.
Clifton Forge radio station WXCF is being purchased by WVJT LLC, a limited partnership based in Versailles, Ky.
WVJT, which purchased Covington radio station WKEY-WIQO earlier this year, expected to complete its acquisition of WXCF within 90 days.
Terms of the transaction are not being disclosed.
