Today’s Headline: Kirk Is Sentenced To Year In Prison.
Maynard Kirk, 21-year-old youth, received a prison sentence of one year yesterday following his conviction by a jury in circuit court for the felonious cutting of Frederick Halterman, another youth, in a fight which occurred between the two boys last March.
The jury deliberated only 20 minutes before returning the verdict of guilty.
An unusually large number of golfing ladies played the Westvaco course yesterday – being Monday and Monday being the weekly ladies’ day.

Today’s Headline: Plans Made To Re-Enact Dedication Of Monument.
A steering committee of the Covington-Alleghany County Centennial Committees met Thursday evening to make preliminary plans for the re-enactment of the “Dedication of the Confederate Monument” which will take place Sept. 16.
The monument was originally dedicated Sept. 15, 1911.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital School of Nursing, Clifton Forge, has been informed by the Virginia State Board of Nurse Examiners that 14 graduates of the June class who took state board examinations have passed them successfully and are now registered nurses.

Today’s Headline: Firemen Hold Mini-Convention.
The Selma Volunteer Fire Department took five fire place awards in the fourth annual mini-firemen’s convention, held Sunday at the Covington Industrial Park and the Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department won two.
The mini-convention has been held for the past four years for volunteer firemen in the Highlands just prior to the annual Virginia State Firemen’s Convention.
Firemen participate in the same contests which will be held during the state convention.

Today’s Headline: Clifton Forge Police Warn Of Possible Scam Attempts.
The Clifton Forge Police Department is warning residents to be wary of scam attempts through e-mails.
According to Clifton Forge Police Chief Barry Balser, the latest scam attempt involved an e-mail to an area resident from a gentleman who said he was working in Ireland and had been contracted through Nigeria.
