Today’s Headline: Justice Dyche Protects Kids If Neglected.
Parents in Alleghany County who do not keep their children in school are going to find a rocky road ahead of them this winter unless they can show that their children absolutely cannot attend school.
Four truant cases were called in Justice Dyche’s court this morning, but only one of the defendants appeared.
The judge gave her until noon today to present a doctor’s certificate showing that the child was ill.
Warrants were turned over to Mr. G.F. Arrington, truant officer, with instruction to arrest and place in jail the other defendants.

Today’s Headline: Local NLRB Hearing Is Adjourned.
The National Labor Relations Board hearing which started here Thursday morning to hear a dispute between the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company and Local 675, United Papermakers and Paperworkers, was adjourned Friday until 10 a.m. October 23 at 3:50 p.m. by Miss Louise Felton, hearing officer.
The hearing involves the issue of whether three pipefitter foremen and a paint foreman at the Covington plant are supervisory employees not entitled to union representation.

Today’s Headline: Covington School Board Considers Issue Of Declining Enrollment.
The city of Covington may have to close one of the system’s four schools in the near future to counter a steady decline in student enrollment.
The board directed Superintendent Dr. William Sibley to draw up several scenarios of changes that can be implemented in the system for the board to choose.
A ribbon cutting coordinated by the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce was held Monday afternoon at the State Bank of the Alleghenies to commemorate the opening of a 3,000 square foot addition to the bank.
The bank opened on February 26, 1979.

Today’s Headline: Community Mourns Death Of Student.
Over 200 Covington High School students and faculty members gathered at Burton Field Friday night to celebrate the life of Robert James Smith, 16, who died Thursday morning following an automobile accident on Interstate 64 Wednesday.
A candlelight vigil was held with the Revs. Doug Hollenbeck and Dan Gillette offering prayers and remarks during the service.
