Today’s Headline: Rayon Employee Overcome By Gas.
Walter Crawford, an employee at the Rayon Plant, was overcome by carbon monoxide gas this morning while he was working in a garage at the plant. At the time he was overcome, the motor of one of the automobiles in the garage was running.
Mrs. J.N. Sheets of Church Street is spending several days visiting in Danville.

Today’s Headline: First Aid & Life Saving Crew To Get Oxygen Gear.
The First Aid and Life Saving Crew of the Covington Fire Department will be one of 25 units to be given oxygen dispensing equipment by the Virginia Heart Association. All of the units are located in areas not served by chapters of the association.
A group of employees of Stegar Pharmacy will hear John Bowles, president of the Rexall Drug Company, speak at a dinner meeting to be held at the Gateway Hotel in Ronceverte, W.Va., Thursday night at 7 o’clock.

Today’s Headline: Covington Police Chief Retiring After 28 Years.
Police Chief Donald J. Leet has announced his retirement after 28 years as head of the Covington Police Department. His last day with the department will be June 5.
A native of South Norfolk, now Chesapeake, Leet, 58, came to the area Feb. 1, 1958, to take the post of Covington police chief. George Arritt has served as police chief before him and Leet replaced acting chief Pius Kemper.

Today’s Headline: Sheriff’s Institute Scholarships Announced.
Alleghany County Sheriff Dale Muterspaugh has announced that three local high school students and one college student have been awarded scholarships by the Virginia Sheriff’s Institute.
The four recipients are Crystal Loudermilk, Jarred S. Brooks, Jacob R. Tolley and Steven E. Dickson.
A proposed budget presented to Clifton Forge Town Council Tuesday night calls for no increase in taxes or fees.
