Today’s Headline: That Much Needed Bridge At Last Will Be Erected.
A three-year struggle for a highway bridge over the Jackson River at the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway yards in Clifton Forge ended successfully today when the State Highway Department advertised for bids on the project.
Frank Wheeler, mayor of Clifton Forge, is due the lion’s share of the credit for the successful culmination of the three-year drive for a bridge. Approximately $157,050 has been allocated from all sources for the bridge.

Today’s Headline: Sheriff Smashes Moonshine Still.
Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department officials this morning destroyed an unattended giant 100-gallon cooker still near Big Run, one mile off Ogles Creek.
Sheriff Max Swoope said the operation was the largest he had ever seen in this area. He estimated the equipment and supplies found in the still at nearly $4,000.

Today’s Headline: Radio System Makes Improvements In Communications For Local Police.
Sammons Communications Inc., 356 W. Main St., has agreed to allow the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department to place a base station for a new radio system on the cable company’s tower located on Horse Mountain.
Sammons has one of the highest elevation sites in Alleghany County, according to Lt. D.L. Cale of the sheriff’s department.

The state’s top amateur golfers are coming back to the Cascades to decide a champion.
The Virginia State Golf Association’s 93rd amateur championship makes a return to the Homestead next week with a 120-man field competition for the Schwarzchild Brothers Trophy.
