The Curtis A. Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033 held a flag retirement ceremony Tuesday evening at the Post home on Dolly Ann Drive in Covington.
Post 1033 members, assisted by members of Boy Scout Troop 26 from Edgemont Presbyterian Church, retired the flags by burning them and later burying the ashes.
According to the U.S. Flag Code, the proper protocol for retirement of worn out American flags is for the flags to be burned in a dignified manner.
Here, Dan Jones, past commander of Post 1033, watches Troop 26 member Steven Andrews place a flag in the barrel.
