DUNMORE, W.Va. — The Bath County Chargers have been busy over the past four nights.

The Chargers finished a three-game in four-night road stretch Monday, losing here to Pocahontas County 58-23.

Ivy Barker led the Chargers with seven points, while Emily Black added six.

“They jumped on us in the first quarter and we could never recover from the deficit,” said BCHS coach Danny Sifford. “We were fighting an uphill battle from the very beginning. And against a team with the shooters they have, you have to  score points. Defensively, we didn’t play that badly, but we are still not playing tough enough for my liking.”

Over the weekend at a tournament hosted by Auburn High School, Bath County lost a pair of two-point decisions. Bath fell to the host Eagles in a Friday semifinal 32-30, before losing to Eastern Montgomery in Saturday’s consolation game 45-43.

“My girls are improving and we still have a long way to go,” said Sifford, whose team dropped to 0-6. “But I like our effort. We have been playing really good teams and my girls are working hard and are seeing the intensity that you need to bring to the game night after night.”

The games were similar on Friday and Saturday, with Auburn and East Mont both making free throws late and seeing last-second attempts from the Chargers rim out.

Friday, Auburn made 15-of-36 free throws, while Bath connected on only 3-of-14.

“That was the difference,” Sifford said. “Defensively, we played well enough to win the ball game, but we committed some lazy reaching fouls instead of moving our feet to get better position.”

Kim Lindsay and Chloe Conners both had eight points each for Bath County.

“Chloe Conners played a good game and Kim Lindsay has really started to exert herself on both ends of the floor,” said Sifford.

Emily Black had a big 17-point night in Saturday’s loss to the Mustangs.

“Emily played a great game,” Sifford offered. “She plays hard night in and night out and really has shown some great floor leadership. Myranda Matheny also played hard and really stepped up her game Saturday,

Bath County will play at Riverheads on Thursday and in a holiday tournament at Petersburg, W.Va., on Friday and Saturday.
