COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany softball is moving on in the regional playoffs after shutting out Rockbridge County 2-0 on Wednesday evening in the opening round of postseason play.
The Lady Cougars used timely hitting and another dominant outing from Emma Skidmore in the circle to secure the win and advance to Saturday’s regional semifinal matchup at Western Albemarle. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
Skidmore tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings. She threw 92 pitches, including 66 strikes, and faced 26 batters in the win.
Alleghany finished with six hits offensively. Paige Webb went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Kaylee Nicely added a double as part of a 1-for-3 performance. Brianna Terrell, Emma Skidmore, Peyton Broughman, and Ava Howard each collected hits.
Howard and Brooklyn Taylor drove in the two Alleghany runs. Webb and Skidmore each crossed the plate for the Lady Cougars.
Defensively, Alleghany held Rockbridge scoreless throughout the night behind Skidmore’s work in the circle and steady play in the field.
With the victory, the Lady Cougars advance to face Western Albemarle on Saturday with a spot in the regional championship game on the line.
