CLIFTON FORGE, Va. (VR) – The Clifton Forge Town Council held a promising monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 8.
After the approval of last month’s meeting minutes and local reports, the council heard and approved several proclamations, including an effort to recognize April 6-12 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
Council members and a robust crowd also celebrated a proclamation to recognize the 90th anniversary of the Clifton Forge Lion’s Club, chartered in 1938. The local chapter of the Lion’s Club is now one of the only remaining regional clubs and supports most of the Highlands Region. The Lion’s Club helps organize community events and sponsors efforts to collect used eyeglasses. Drop boxes for used glasses are located at both local libraries in Clifton Forge and Covington. The local chapter is also spear-heading a program to help promote vision screenings in the schools.
A presentation from the Community Gathering organization offered an opportunity for council members and local residents to better understand the branding initiative and how a unified message can help promote businesses and community events alike. Council voted to pursue new grant funding for this project.
Pamela Irvine, Joan Vannorsdall, and Amy Dew were all approved for reappointments to several community committees.
Chuck Unroe, Town Manager, gave a promising report regarding upcoming paving and collaborations with Columbia Gas to help offset the paving contracts. He also was pleased to report the new hire of two certified police officers for the town, who are now currently working.
In a somber note, however, Unroe reported that federal budget cuts have eliminated the possibility to secure the $2 million funding initiative for the all abilities park that would have created many recreational opportunities for local families and kids in need.
In closing remarks, council members praised the efforts of the Clifton Forge Lion’s Club and the Community Gathering group for their efforts. Mayor Jeff Irvine also indicated that the re-established Intergovernmental Council, which involves a collaborative group of individuals from area governments and business organizations, had its first meeting with quarterly meetings to continue in the future. Members then moved to a closed session to discuss personnel.
