CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (VR)— Alleghany High School has filed an appeal seeking a change to the Virginia High School League’s recommended alignment plan for the 2027-31 school years.

The Cougars are requesting to move to Class 2, Region B rather than remain assigned to Class 3, Region C. This is Alleghany’s second year competing in the Region 3C Shenandoah District after previously competing in the Three Rivers District.

A five-member committee will hear alignment appeals Aug. 25 before making a recommendation on the final plan. Any additional appeals must be submitted to the VHSL Executive Committee by Sept. 8.

Alleghany Assistant Athletic Director Will Fields explained what the proposed move would mean for the Cougars.

“We are very close to the cutoff and obviously we would like to play in 2A,” Fields said. “Our current region (3C) is the toughest in Class 3, but 2B is tough too. However, we feel we fit better there demographically.”
